About Waste Advisers
WASTE was established on 7th July 1983 in the Netherlands under Commercial Register Number 41172933. WASTE exists to build sustainable sanitation and solid waste systems in developing countries that contribute to clean environments, healthy and happy lives. It operates in over 30 countries across the globe and opened its country office in Malawi in 2014.
In Malawi, WASTE partnered with Welt Hunger Hilfe and WES Management on the “Poverty Reduction and Improved Health in Peri-urban Malawi” EU funded project for Zomba City, Liwonde and Mangochi Town Councils while the ‘Sanitation Service Level Agreement Implementation’ BMGF funded project, WASTE partners with Blantyre City Council. In addition, it also partners with Pump Aid and AYISE on the “Small scale business development and community mobilization for healthy and clean urban slums” project being implemented in Blantyre and Lilongwe urban slum areas. WASTE has also done numerous research projects and field trials in Malawi.
WASTE in Malawi, with its partners, have to date assisted 44 schools and 25 markets with improved water and sanitation services through improved systems. They have trained over 100 entrepreneurs in low cost toilet construction who in turn have built over 500 latrines. Further down the sanitation chain they assisted with the formation of two modern pit emptying businesses and 4 treatment facilities. For solid waste management, they have set up 7 recycling centers who have collected over 250 tons of household waste and are selling compost from this recycled waste to nurseries and end users.
